Overview

This 7-month capstone project was a collaboration with Strived.io, an AI-powered K12 education data platform. Our goal was to bridge the gap between teachers and parents by designing intuitive, research-driven, and AI-supported systems that deliver whole-child insights and personalized recommendations to improve student outcomes.

As the teams designer and product manager, I translated research insights into actionable design solutions, integrating AI and learning science principles into the product. We developed and iterated on 2 perspectives: from parents' end a desktop chatbot with AI agent to smoothen communication; and from teachers' side a teacher dashboard too boost productivity. Through 10+ usability tests with real users, our prototypes achieved good usability with System Usability Scale (SUS) scores of 87 (parents) and 93 (teachers).

Outcome

The whole project involves:

Survey Responses

+

Survey response from both parent and teachers for insights.

User testing sessions

0

+

One-on-one 1-hour user testing sessions to gather design feedback.

Versions of Design Outcome

0

MVPs for Teachers' platform, Parents' communication portal.

SUS Usability Score

93 (teachers), 87 (parents)

Problem

Teachers struggle to act quickly on fragmented student data, while parents lack timely, actionable insights to support learning at home. Existing platforms fail to balance transparency, workload, and meaningful communication

Insights

What Teachers value:

clustering, transparency, and message logging

What Parents want:

clarity, goal tracking, and reduced notification noise

What a good AI-Ed product could be:

AI can mediate, not replace, teacher–parent communication, easing workload while offering proactive resources

Design Solution

A dual-ended design for whole-child data approaches and nextGen teacher-parent collaboration.

Parents APP —To triage concerns, stay connected, and grow with the child.

Parents play a critical role in children’s education by contributing insights beyond school—covering performance, emotions, concerns, behavior, and health.

Building on Strived.io’s existing product logic, we designed a parent-facing communication channel where interactions begin with an AI chatbot that intelligently routes inquiries to the appropriate resource, person, or platform.

01

AI-powered triage chatbot to route questions, reduce teacher workload, and provide immediate curated resources.

02

Personalized sync tools: announcements, calendar, to-do lists.

The chatbot works as a versatile ‘customer support’ that handles parent triage and involvement with knowledge of the app, the school, teachers, and general resources.

We quickly prototyped a functioning chatbot using Voiceflow for user testing the routing bot idea.
The chatbot is set to keep its language brief and affirming, show active listening, provide button shortcuts for user response, and show a summary card at the end of each inquiry.

03

Smart data tracking: wellbeing + academics, visualized for easy follow-up.

Synched personal calendar:Allow parents to be well-prepared by seamless events and due date listing connected to the school.

Announcements and To-dos:Dedicated places to show different types of updates as clear reminders, with categorical labels.

04

Actionable parenting tips with theory-based explanations.

Each parent inquiry is logged and paired with tailored tips, along with a brief “Why this matters” explanation grounded in learning science. This keeps parents informed, supported, and empowered to make small but meaningful contributions at home.

Teachers APP Extension The whole-child approach involving AI + Data + Parents

We are building an all-in-one platform that integrates an AI-powered assistant to support teaching strategies and personalized recommendations, leveraging models such as Learner Variability Project (LVP) and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).

We also introduce a student clustering system that allows teachers to organize and manage students based on academic performance, whole-child data, behavioral insights, and even family context.

Our platform also includes an AI-powered communication tool designed to streamline and improve parent-teacher interactions.

01

Smart clustering of student data for group-to-individual interventions.

Clustering gives teacher more convenience in specialized and customized treatments for different students.

Teacher select the criteria (events, metrics, subject) they want to learn deeper about students, and the Strived cluster bot can select and categorize for them.

02

All-in-one AI Platform: Integrating productivity space to streamline communication loops.

The platform enables teachers to plan instruction, manage tasks, and communicate with students, parents, and staff—all in one place. Each workflow is supported by a dedicated productivity chatbot within a unified dashboard, allowing teachers to seamlessly reply to messages, draft announcements, and receive data-driven recommendations in parallel.

03

AI Chatbot, Ask Anytime.

Our AI chatbot supports teachers by addressing a wide range of instructional and classroom questions. Teachers can download resources or save insights directly into a personal teaching notebook, improving efficiency and accuracy while providing evidence-based support for instruction and documentation.
